Walmart executive named president of the Network of Executive Women

CHICAGO Michelle Gloeckler, SVP merchandise execution for Walmart, has been elected president of the Network of Executive Women, the largest diversity organization serving the multitrillion-dollar consumer products and retail industry.

Gloeckler, who was elected at the association’s annual meeting on Sept. 27 in Charlotte, N.C., will serve as NEW president for one year. The group’s mission is to attract, retain and advance women in the consumer products and retail industries through education, leadership and business development.

“Michelle Gloeckler has experience as a senior leader on both the retail and supply sides of the industry,” said Joan Toth, NEW’s executive director. “Her passion and enthusiasm for developing women leaders, strong history of achievement in the area of diversity and inclusion, and keen dedication to our mission are all qualities we sought when choosing who will take our organization to the next level. We’re excited to have her as our leader.”

Gloeckler will help NEW advance its five strategic imperatives for 2011. The group describes those goals as “growth, superior education and networking opportunities, leadership succession planning, value to sponsors and enhanced brand equity in celebration of NEW’s 10th anniversary.”

Gloeckler, a 20-year veteran of the confection industry, joined Walmart last year. She recently was promoted to SVP merchandise execution after heading up the retail giant’s confection, front-end and impulse sales. Prior to joining Walmart, she worked at The Hershey Co., where she last served as VP sales for strategic customers, responsible for more than $1 billion in the mass, drug and club channels.

“I’m honored and humbled by this appointment and look forward to advancing the good work of my predecessors,” Gloeckler said. “NEW is a vital, unique organization. Through the collective knowledge and passion of our members, we will continue to make a difference in the advancement of women leaders at all levels.”

Shire to acquire Movetis

DUBLIN Shareholders of Belgian drug maker Movetis have put up nearly all of their shares for sale as British drug maker Shire moves to acquire the company, Shire said Thursday.

 

Shire said 99.18% of Movetis’ shares had been tendered as of Monday.

 

 

Shire announced last month that it would buy Movetis for $567 million. The Turnhout, Belgium-based company makes gastroenterology drugs.

Melville’s a step in the right direction for CHPA

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT If there were just one word that captured the flavor of CHPA today, that word likely would be “collaborator.” Because under Linda Suydam’s tutelage, any issue addressed by CHPA never really felt like an “us” or “them,” but rather a confluence of issues and concerned stakeholders all flowing toward a singular, fair solution. With the naming of Scott Melville as CHPA’s next president, it seems the association may have a little more of the same to look forward to.

Melville comes to CHPA as a veteran facilitator familiar with health care and, more importantly, the vital roles over-the-counter medicines and natural health solutions play in today’s healthcare system. As announced, Melville most recently served as SVP government affairs and general counsel for the Healthcare Distribution and Management Association and at one time had worked on the staff of Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Calif., a member of Congress since 1978 and former chair of the House Appropriations Committee (Lewis served in that capacity from 2005 to 2007).

And at CHPA, Melville will have an opportunity to bring all of his decades of experience as an advocator in the healthcare sector to bear. After all, next year the first baby boomers will be celebrating their 65th birthdays. And as the largest generational demographic continues to contend with the wellness issues associated with old age, you can bet today’s healthcare model will be wholly transformed within the next decade. And that means CHPA will be in need of a steady hand at the helm to help frame tomorrow’s healthcare model if self care and affordable access to medicines are to remain a reality.

So in that respect, Drug Store News agrees with CHPA chairman Christopher DeWolf’s assessment that Melville’s “experience in public policy, coalition-building and working with government officials and key stakeholders will be invaluable in guiding the industry through the rapidly changing healthcare environment.”
