Walmart Canada goes on offensive ahead of Target arrival

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Walmart isn’t about to let the grass grow under its feet in Canada. The discounter plans to spend about $753 million this fiscal year to expand its store presence in Canada, before rival Target begins its push in the country.

The plans call for at least 73 projects — including new store builds, store expansions, remodels, and relocations — during the fiscal year that ends Jan. 31, 2013. The program will add 4.6 million sq. ft. of retail space to Walmart Canada’s operations, and up its store count to more than 375. The company currently has 333 stores in the country.

The move will put Walmart ahead of competitor Target, which has launched a Canadian debut that calls for 125 to 135 stores by early 2013.

NRF launches video contest in line with ‘Retail Means Jobs’ campaign

WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation is taking its "Retail Means Jobs" campaign one step further with the launch of a video contest.

The "This is Retail" video contest looks to highlight the important role retail plays in the U.S. economy by offering a variety of career choices and employment opportunities, NRF said. Retail employees or business owners can submit a two-minute video sharing their retail story; winners of the contest will be awarded $50,000.

"We’re on a hunt to find the best retail stories in America — from marketing geniuses to customer service superstars to small business owners, who are the fabric of every local community,” NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay said. “NRF’s ‘This is Retail’ contest will put a face on an industry that is seamlessly woven into the fabric of America and influences every aspect of our life and culture — from commerce and fashion to real estate and public policy.”

CVS Caremark Charitable Trust ‘surprises’ nonprofits with $4.3M in funding

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — Representatives of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, a private foundation created by CVS Caremark, kicked off a "Day of Giving" on Tuesday by surprising several nonprofits with the grant funding they had requested.

The visits, hosted by several of the company’s executives, were timed to coincide with the announcement that $4.3 million has been awarded in grants to 98 nonprofit organizations across the country in 2011, which includes multiyear grants from previous years.

The new grant recipients were chosen through the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust’s annual grant cycle, in which awards range from $10,000 to $50,000 for one-year support. These grants align with the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust’s efforts to improve the quality of health and well-being of underserved populations, and also align with CVS Caremark All Kids Can, a signature program of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and CVS Caremark that is committed to supporting children with disabilities.

"We are so excited to help these nonprofit organizations start 2012 in a positive way with much-needed funding," stated Eileen Howard Boone, VP of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. "All of the nonprofit organizations we support share our commitment to providing greater access to health care and medical services, and improving the lives of children with disabilities.
