Walgreens gets top score among drug chains in Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index

DEERFIELD, Ill. — A national gay-rights organization has given Walgreens top marks for its practices related to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

In its 2014 Corporate Equality Index, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation gave the Deerfield, Ill.-based retail pharmacy chain a "perfect" score of 100. 2014 is the ninth year that Walgreens has won a perfect score.

"As a company that prides itself on its commitment to diversity and inclusion, we know that an atmosphere that fosters people’s growth and development despite individual differences is critical to the future of our company," Walgreens chief human resource officer Kathleen Wilson-Thompson said. "It is an honor to be recognized once again by the Human Rights Campaign for our commitment to diversity and inclusiveness, and I applaud our team for continuing to evolve policies and practices to help ensure a welcoming workplace for all."

The second- and third-largest retail pharmacy chains, CVS and Rite Aid, received scores of 85 and 60, respectively. Other retailers on the list include Safeway, with a score of 100; Kroger, 85; Delhaize, 100; Supervalu, 90; Ahold, 55; Walmart, 80; Target, 100; Meijer, 25; Kmart parent company Sears Holdings, 100; Costco, 90; Dollar General, 75; and Family Dollar, 30. Among the three major wholesalers, Cardinal Health and McKesson both received scores of 100, while AmerisourceBergen’s score was 55.

Clearette increases production capacity

NEW YORK — Clearette, a manufacturer of electronic cigarettes, has ordered specialized equipment in an effort to improve production output in hopes to allow volume increases.  

"Our estimates indicate implementation of fully automated manufacturing will reduce production costs in labor alone in the 25% range. It goes beyond that, however. Fully automating our manufacturing process for the E-Liquid Line will allow us to have 100% control over our entire process," Clearette’s senior manufacturing manager Richard Delapena said. "This will allow Clearette to efficiently meet and adjust to consumer demand, and manufacture hundreds of different vapor flavors in a variety of different nicotine strengths creating thousands of unique combinations, and, most importantly, consumer satisfaction and loyalty."

Clearette closes out 2013 having seen high growth in all of its e-cigarette and vapor product lines.

Security blogger Brian Krebs may have found a seller of data from Target payment card breach

NEW YORK — The security blogger who broke the news about a massive breach of payment card data at Target stores may have identified someone who’s been selling the data.

In his Krebs on Security blog, Brian Krebs identified a Ukrainian man as someone allegedly selling the credit and debit card data, though there was no evidence that the man was behind the theft itself.

Krebs found the man by combing through online forums where stolen payment card data are sold, such as rescator.la, kaddafi.hk and cheapdumps.org and finding their owner, who uses the nickname Rescator.

Target confirmed last week that about 40 million credit and debit cards were hacked between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15. Target has been working with federal authorities to investigate the matter, but according to the New York Times, JPMorgan Chase notified customers who had used its cards at Target stores while the breach occurred that it would limit them to cash withdrawals of $100 per day and purchases of $300 per day, a move that would affect about 2 million accounts.
