Walgreens enables third-party mobile app developers to integrate prescription refill technology
DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Monday made available a new application programming interface that allows third-party mobile app developers to integrate the drug store chain’s prescription refill technology. Developers who have scanning functionality within their apps can easily integrate the API to enable their users to order a prescription refill by scanning the bar code on a Walgreens prescription bottle.
“People continue to become increasingly engaged with their mobile devices and use the technology to help make their day-to-day lives easier,” stated Abhi Dhar, Walgreens e-commerce chief technology officer. “By incorporating the Walgreens Prescription API, mobile app developers are providing users with an easy way to refill prescriptions and help them properly take their medication.”
The Walgreens Prescription API has been adopted by several app developers, including Healthspek and PocketPharmacist. “Walgreens’ leadership position in technology and consumer empowerment fits perfectly with Healthspek’s message to consumers ‘Own Your Chart!’,” noted Randy Farr, president of Healthspek.
"We believe this adds to our goal of helping people better understand and manage their medications [on PocketPharamcist]," added Michael Guren, CEO of Danike, creator of the PocketPharmacist app.
The Walgreens Prescription API marks the first time such technology is available for adoption among mobile app developers who focus on health and wellness, and it is the second API program offered by Walgreens. Last year, Walgreens launched its QuickPrints SDK and API, which provided third-party developers with the ability to integrate in-store photo services for its users.
Rexam, Rx Timer Cap partner to promote medication adherence
PERRYSBURG, Ohio — Prescription vial manufacturer Rexam has a deal with Rx Timer Cap to adapt the cap to its vials, Rexam said.
Rexam said the partnership would help improve medication adherence. The Rx Timer Cap has a built-in LCD timer that automatically counts the minutes and hours since patients last took their medication.
"As the need to address adherence becomes more important in addressing rising healthcare costs, we are pleased our customers are appealing to us to integrate the Rx Timer Cap into their prescription filing operations," Rexam Healthcare VP sales and marketing Pat O’Connell said. "It’s another example of our ongoing efforts to deliver packaging solutions that address industry issues and add product and service value."
H. D. Smith names new EVP for specialty arm Smith Medical Partners
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — H. D. Smith on Monday announced the appointment of Tim Booth to EVP, Smith Medical Partners. Smith Medical Partners is a wholly owned subsidiary of H. D. Smith focused on specialty pharmaceutical distribution and services, and is part of the newly formed H. D. Smith Specialty Solutions group.

Booth most recently served as corporate VP of H. D. Smith’s Home Healthcare operations. He joined H. D. Smith in 2012 as corporate VP Home Healthcare where he was credited with improving the company’s home healthcare profit through vendor and customer relationships, sales leadership and distribution center coordination.
Prior to joining H. D. Smith, Booth was president of RxPak, a division of The McKesson Corporation, specializing in the financial and operational responsibilities of its pharmaceutical packaging division. His experience also includes serving as president/CEO of PrePak Holdings, a private equity-owned pharmaceutical packaging contract manufacturing and packaging company.
Booth holds a master’s of business administration degree, with a concentration in international business and finance, from Cleveland State University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree of business administration, with a finance emphasis from the same institution.
