Vicks hits market with a thermometer for millennial parents

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.- Kaz on Tuesday announced its entry into the connected health space with the unveiling of the new Vicks SmartTemp wireless smartphone thermometer. The first Bluetooth enabled thermometer from a major brand, the Vicks SmartTemp makes tracking multiple kids' temperatures easier with a companion app available for Android or Apple devices. 
 
"As a result of our team's extensive research, we know moms value accuracy and ease of use when shopping for a thermometer," stated Lara Peterson, VP of healthcare at Kaz USA. "We understand the challenges parents face trying to accurately remember their children's fever histories. We've combined the flexible features we know mom loves from our market leading digital sticks with the convenience of wireless automated temperature history tracking via our free companion App. Finally mom has all the accurate information she needs right at hand for a smarter doctor's visit."
 
By using the free Vicks SmartTemp App, individualized profiles can be created for each family member to store their detailed temperature history. The temperature readings are automatically populated from the thermometer via a wireless Bluetooth connection, while symptoms, medications and other notes can be added to help track an illness and as reference when sharing updates with a physician. 
 
The Vicks SmartTemp App also features Fever InSight guidance, which turns the screen of the mobile device a different color depending on the temperature reading. The screen will change from green to yellow or red as body temperature rises, respectively, to indicate no fever, moderate fever or high fever and to help caregivers better understand its meaning. Temperature readings and symptom notes can be exported via email for simple sharing with a family doctor, school nurse or other family member. Reminders can also be set up to help mom keep on track with Doctors' advice. These notifications prompt mom at a requested time with the prior dosage information for each family member, or provide a temperature notification at a requested time.
 
The thermometer has a suggested retail price of $24.99 and will be available at major pharmacy and baby retailers in September 2015.

AARP raises awareness around national caregiver campaign

WASHINGTON — November is National Family Caregivers Month and AARP is launching a national campaign to bring awareness to the role that family caregivers play in the lives of their loved ones. AARP's Random Acts of Kindness for Caregivers contest will begin on Oct. 15 with the goal of encouraging people to recognize and reward caregivers — many of whom spend 18 hours per week providing care like bathing, dressing, preparing meals, administering medications, driving to doctor visits or paying bills — in small but meaningful ways.
 
"Caregiving may be one of the greatest expressions of love and it's woven into the lives of one in six adults," stated Amy Goyer, AARP family and caregiving expert and author of the new book "Juggling Life, Work and Caregiving." "A staggering 40 million family caregivers provide support for loved ones and, as a caregiver myself, I know that the smallest acts of kindness – like holding a door for someone pushing a wheelchair, surprising them with flowers or even taking a caregiver's dog for a walk – can be memorable moments in the life of a caregiver."
 
More than half of caregivers say they feel overwhelmed by the amount of care their family member needs. Through the Random Acts of Kindness for Caregivers contest, AARP hopes that by encouraging people to show family caregivers small signs of support, it might encourage overwhelmed caregivers, free them up to have more time with loved ones they care for, or even give them personal time to relax and rejuvenate. Those sharing simple acts of kindness are encouraged to submit stories and a photo of their random acts to the contest website found at www.aarp.org/caregiverkindness. In March, AARP will select 12 winners who have made a meaningful difference in the lives of family caregivers. The winners will share a $10,000 prize.
 
The October issue of AARP The Magazine is taking readers inside the hearts and homes of caregivers across the country. Through pictures, videos and stories, readers will learn about ordinary people caring for spouses, friends, children and parents. Some of the families featured live with the people they care for and one caregiver has to board a plane frequently to care for her mom.
 
Overall, the face of caregiving is changing.  While most caregivers are women, 40% of caregivers are men. As many as 1 in 4 caregivers is a millennial and 60% of caregivers provide care for an adult while working outside of the home, requiring them to balance caregiving and work responsibilities.  
 
To help caregivers like the ones featured in AARP The Magazine, AARP is hosting a Virtual Family Caregiving Fair that will take place on Nov. 19. From the comfort of a home or office, a caregiver can register and join the free fair online at aarp.org/familycarefair. During the virtual fair, a caregiver can tour the exhibit hall with more than 15 booths showcasing various caregiving resources and programs, enter a "mix and mingle" lounge to connect with experts and other caregivers through online chats, visit a virtual auditorium to view scheduled and on-demand presentations and videos, and explore a library with additional resources for caregivers.

NCPA honors Upsher-Smith Laboratories

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — Upsher-Smith Laboratories was honored Sunday with the National Community Pharmacists Association 2015 Corporate Recognition Award. The award recognizes outstanding support and work on behalf of independent community pharmacies. 
 
Upsher-Smith was represented by Mike McBride, VP partner relations and JoAnn Gaio, senior account manager. 
 
“We are pleased to honor Upsher-Smith Laboratories with the NCPA 2015 Corporate Recognition Award,” stated John Sherrer, NCPA president. “This innovative company has focused on offering a variety of quality products that help independent community pharmacies and their patients reach their goals. Beyond its support for NCPA, Upsher Smith Laboratories has been an initiator of pro-independent community pharmacy initiatives, including the Healthcare Distribution Management Association’s Front End Forum – which is done in cooperation with NCPA and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association – and research projects with Hamacher Resource Group. The collaboration with Hamacher has resulted in a three-volume series of eBooks designed to help independent community pharmacies, with the newest one titled "Promotional Event Planning: Made Easy."
