Target tests omnichannel initiatives at new San Francisco office
NEW YORK — Target is hoping to tap Silicon Valley talent in developing its omnichannel business, the company said.
The mass merchandise retailer announced the opening of a new office in San Francisco that will allow it to work with technology companies in the area to create new digital and mobile shopping programs.
"The San Francisco office for Target is really part of a broader ecosystem of innovation," office director David Newman said. "For us, it’s really, ‘How do we get further ahead of some of the emerging technologies? How do we find those things that are just starting to be funded by the venture capital community?’"
According to Reuters, some of the new initiatives include "augmented reality," where shoppers can use smartphone cameras to get a digital view of store aisles.
Dollar General Literacy Foundation awards more than $6M to literacy groups across U.S.
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced today awards of more than $6 million in grants to more than 725 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations to support adult, family and summer literacy programs.
“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of serving others throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

Rite Aid appoints Bruce Bodaker to board of directors
CAMP HILL, Pa. — A California health executive has been appointed to Rite Aid’s board of directors, the retail pharmacy chain said Monday.
Rite Aid announced the election of former Blue Shield of California president, chairman and CEO Bruce Bodaken. Bodaken, 61, spent 18 years working for the San Francisco-based company before stepping down in 2012 as president, chairman and CEO, a position he had held since 2000. He previously worked for companies like managed care provider FHP and is currently a director and audit committee chairman at WageWorks, as well as a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Value and Science-Driven Health Care.
"We are very pleased to welcome Bruce to our board," Rite Aid chairman, president and CEO John Standley said.
