Target gives a lesson in education donations

MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced that this fall it is investing more than $50 million in education.

The donation will fund such programs as Target School Library Makeovers, Take Charge of Education and a series of education grants and awards that will provide the resources needed to help students and teachers excel, the company reported.

“We know there is a strong correlation between a child’s ability to read proficiently by the end of third grade and the likelihood that they will graduate from high school on time, ready for college, a career and life,” Target president of community relations Laysha Ward said. “To ensure our country remains competitive and our future workforce is well educated, we are continuing to invest in innovative education programs that will drive better reading outcomes and pave a path to graduation for more U.S. children.”

Target said the $50 million investment this fall is part of its goal to reach a total of $1 billion in giving to education, with a focus on reading, by the end of 2015.

This fall, Target said it will donate more than $26 million to schools nationwide as part of its Take Charge of Education program. This brings the total amount Target guests have helped the company contribute to schools to more than $324 million since the program’s inception in 1997. The Take Charge of Education program empowers guests to direct a portion of their Target REDcard purchases to an eligible, local K to 12 school of their choice, Target said. Educators at these schools may then use the funds for whatever they need most, from books and school supplies to classroom technology.

Target said it will fund more than $20 million in education grants, awards and an in-school literacy program this fall. The grants and awards, a portion of which are given from its 1,762 stores, will provide schools, libraries, teachers and nonprofit organizations the resources they need to put more books into children’s hands. In addition, an in-school literacy program is currently being executed in six Minneapolis schools. The program is aimed at helping more Minneapolis school children learn to read proficiently by the end of third grade.

In 2011, Target said it will completely transform 42 elementary school libraries in communities across the country as part of the Target School Library Makeover program. This represents an investment of more than $6 million.

E.F. Bavis announces Bavis Solar Transaction Drawer

CINCINNATI — E.F. Bavis and Associates has launched a solar-powered transaction drawer for banking and pharmacy drive-through lanes, the company said.

The Bavis Solar Transaction Drawer is a recent modification of its original, nonsolar drawer and part of its energy-saving product line. The drawer — designed to eliminate problems at drive-through windows, such as inability to reach transactions and poor audio communication — is for companies with an eye on environmental sustainability, but also saving, as the new drawer requires little maintenance and fewer replacement parts or service calls. In addition, virtually every component of the drawer is recyclable and is manufactured in the United States.

"Not only is it the world’s first transaction drawer to earn UL-Listed certification as a solar pdocut, it is one of two products made by my company that recently earned UL-Listed certification as solar drive-through equipment," E.F. Bavis president William Sieber said. "Our other product is a remote delivery system for financial and pharmacy applications allowing customers to have a complete solar drive-through setup."

Giancamilli lets Scorpiniti take the wheel

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT — The news that retail vet Andy Giancamilli is retiring in February after more than 40 years in the industry is obviously important news in its own right. However, the end of one storied retail career dovetails with the rise of another, which makes the news especially important.

Frank Scorpiniti, long regarded as one of the bright young executives in retail pharmacy, now gets a chance to lead a progressive Canadian pharmacy chain, with a hot new format, a national presence under Rexall, and a slew of interesting programs like the Rexall Network.

Scorpiniti, who joined Katz Group in April as COO, will take the helm upon Giancamilli’s retirement.

"Frank is a strategic thinker who has a passion for the retail pharmacy industry, and a proven ability to drive growth and performance within an organization," Giancamilli said of Scorpiniti when announcing his appointment to Katz Group in April.

With more than 20 years of retail pharmacy experience, Scorpiniti previously served as SVP pharmacy operations at Duane Reade, a post he had held since December 2008. At Duane Reade, the efforts on the back end in pharmacy, spearheaded by Scorpiniti and his team, resulted in a cost reduction for the company, better in-stocks for stores and less wait time for pharmacy customers.

Now, Scorpiniti inherits the innovative Canadian pharmacy retailer, which encompasses more than 1,800 chain, franchise and independent pharmacies across the country.

You can be certain that Giancamilli, who learned from his mentors long ago never to sacrifice integrity and honesty under any circumstances, wouldn’t be stepping aside to pursue personal endeavors if he didn’t truly believe that the company was in good hands.
