Shopko to expand jewelry, women’s apparel departments as part of chainwide remodel

BY Michael Johnsen

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko on Tuesday announced that it will unveil the results of a partial store remodeling project in all of its 133 Shopko stores on Thursday, Sept. 18.

The remodel includes the removal of the stores’ large glass jewelry cabinets to make shopping in the jewelry department much more convenient and accessible to consumers. Customers will no longer have to wait for a store associate to unlock and remove jewelry items, but will now be able to easily see, touch and try on jewelry pieces.

The removal of the jewelry cabinets allows for more floor space to expand the assortment of fashion jewelry. In addition, Shopko’s women’s apparel department will be expanding its selection of misses and plus size active wear and outerwear and swimwear assortments, categories that have seen significant growth over the past few years.

“We are confident our customers are going to love this change to our stores,” said Jill Soltau, Shopko president and chief merchandising officer. “Our jewelry selection will be much easier to browse and experiment with; and with jewelry playing a key role in individualizing and completing your look, that convenience and access, combined with a new expanded selection of on-trend pieces, will be a big plus for our customers.”

As part of the expansion of its active apparel that features such brands as Nike, Puma and Adidas, Shopko will be significantly expanding its exclusive offering of Energy Zone active wear. This expansion features technical performance workout tops, tees, hoodies, bras and hosiery, as well as an October relaunch of its Energy Zone active bottoms program.

“The athleisure trend is changing the way American women are dressing, making it necessary to expand our product assortment to ensure we are providing a wide array of options for consumers. Our expansion will allow us to increase our bottoms collection and key item tops that are important to them as part of their active lifestyle. Our expanded assortment will feature something for everyone,” Soltau said.

BY Ryan Chavis

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Baxter International announced that the Food and Drug Adminsitration approved Rixubis [coagulation factor IX (recombinant)] for the treatment, control and prevention of bleeding episodes, as well as perioperative management, in children with hemophilia B.

"In addition to the positive reception we’ve received from adult Rixubis patients, the approval for pediatric patients offers a valuable new option, particularly as our clinical data demonstrated a significant reduction in bleeding episodes for patients who were treated prophylactically, an important factor for this young patient population," said John Orloff, M.D., VP of global research and development at Baxter BioScience.

Rixubis was the first recombinant factor IX approved by the FDA for routine prophylaxis and control of bleeding episodes in the United States for adults, the company stated.
