Six individuals — three boxers: Ramiro Angel Huerta, Jay Rodriguez and Wesley Ferrer, and three dancers: Isis Avalos, Gabriela Soto and Kathy Reyes — will have the chance to tell their stories and compete for a boost on their quests to achieve lifelong goals with help from Schick Xtreme3.

Each individual’s "Camino al Exito" will be unveiled through a series of videos showcasing their personal stories and talents. Consumers can participate by viewing the videos and voting for their favorite boxer and dancer online at caminoalexito2013.com or on the Schick Xtreme3 Facebook page.

"At Schick Xtreme3, we know success is a combination of starting the day with confidence and being prepared for whatever life may bring," said Awilda Mendez, assistant brand manager for Schick Xtreme3 at Energizer Personal Care. "Our goal is to help these contestants tell their powerful stories and find the self-assurance they need to make their passions a reality."

Voting opens today and will be open through August 31, 2013. The winning boxer and dancer will be announced in early September and each will be awarded a grand prize to help them on the road to success. The winning boxer will receive a lump-sum cash prize and the winning dancer will have the opportunity to appear in a music video alongside some of her most talented peers and mentors.

Schick Xtreme3 will also run two, thirty second commercial spots on mun2, a national Hispanic cable TV network to help reach its Hispanic audience. The commercials will run in both English and Spanish speaking directly to bilingual Hispanic millennials across the nation while amplifying the program and raising awareness of each athlete’s story.

CRN announces health journalist Dr. Jennifer Ashton to speak at annual symposium

BY DSN STAFF

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition today announced that leading women’s health expert, ABC News’ senior medical contributor and author Jennifer Ashton, M.D., will speak to conference attendees during the “Breakfast With…” session on Saturday, Sept. 21, at The Conference: CRN’s Annual Symposium for the Dietary Supplement Industry, in Park City, Utah.

A board-certified OBGYN, Dr. Ashton has regularly contributed to a number of shows including "The Dr. Oz Show," "The Early Show" and "The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric." Previously, Dr. Ashton worked as the Medical Correspondent for CBS News Network, Fox News Channel and was co-host for the ABC daytime show, "The Revolution."

“We’re very excited to have Dr. Ashton joining us for our breakfast session,” said Judy Blatman, senior vice president of communications, CRN. “We look forward to hearing from her on how the media selects, interprets and covers medical health news, as well as her insights on what women expect from their doctors when it comes to health and family.”

Dr. Ashton has covered many major health and medical stories. She reported from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, after the devastating 2010 earthquake, where she was the network’s primary medical correspondent on location, and contributed numerous reports on the 2009 global outbreak of H1N1. Dr. Ashton is the author of the books, The Body Scoop for Girls and Your Body Beautiful.

The Conference takes place Sept. 18 to 21, immediately following The Workshop: CRN’s Day of Science, Sept. 18. There are four flexible registration options available for the events and a choice between three hotels. The Montage Deer Valley is the event host hotel where the sessions will take place and the Stein Eriksen Lodge and The Chateaux are located 10 minutes away with regular shuttles available. Registrants should book early, as space is very limited.

AmerisourceBergen, Good Neighbor Pharmacy network donate $140,000 to nonprofit in support of community playgrounds

BY Jason Owen

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — AmerisourceBergen Drug Corporation and its Good Neighbor Pharmacy network have announced a new charitable endeavor with KaBoom!, a national nonprofit dedicated to giving kids the childhood they deserve by bringing play to those who need it most. The partnership was announced during ABDC’s annual independent community pharmacy tradeshow, ThoughtSpot 2013, held July 24 to 27 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. A total of $140,000 was raised for KaBoom! during the tradeshow, which will be used to build two playgrounds in areas of Oklahoma affected by recent tornados.

According to KaBoom!, kids today are spending less time playing outdoors than any previous generation of children, a fact that is having disastrous consequences on their health, achievement levels, and overall well-being. To fight this play deficit, KaBoom! has mapped over 100,000 places to play, built more than 2,300 playgrounds, and successfully advocated for play policies in hundreds of cities across the country. KaBoom! also provides communities with online tools to self-organize and take action to support play on both a local and national level. ABDC and Good Neighbor Pharmacy are committed to building an additional three playgrounds around the United States through 2014, for a total of five play areas. The additional three locations have not yet been determined.

“As an organization, we are committed to the health and well-being of our customers, our employees and our communities,” said A.J. Caffentzis, senior vice president of sales and marketing, ABDC. “Our Good Neighbor Pharmacy members, in particular, are cornerstones of their local communities. These independent community pharmacies work to improve patient access and patient health in neighborhoods across the country. Therefore, it makes sense that we would partner with a like-minded organization, such as KaBoom!. We look forward to a long-lasting relationship and building safe playgrounds in well-deserving communities across the country.”

Of the $140,000 raised, ThoughtSpot attendees — including Good Neighbor Pharmacy members and other independent community pharmacy owners, exhibitors and associates — contributed $46,000 through a silent auction and charitable giving, while ABDC and Good Neighbor Pharmacy donated $84,000. The Bret Michaels Life Rocks Foundation — which supports diabetes education and cancer awareness, among other endeavors — gave an additional $10,000. Bret Michaels, front man for the rock band Poison, served as special guest entertainer at this year’s ThoughtSpot.

“There’s a notion that play among children is a luxury and the reality is that play is an absolute necessity,” said Darell Hammond, KaBoom! founder and CEO. “Following traumatic events, play becomes even more critical because it provides children with an emotional outlet and helps create a sense of normalcy. We are thrilled to partner with ABDC to ensure that children across the country have great places to play.”
