NPD Group data reveals that Southern guys are big on fragrance

NEW YORK — Despite overall flat performance, men’s prestige fragrance saw a boost in sales in the South, which is the largest market, according to new data from the NPD Group.

NPD Group reported that, in the 12 months ended April, sales of U.S. prestige men’s fragrance products were $916 million. Additional findings include:

  • The southern region of the United States represents 39% of overall prestige fragrance sales, and $371 million in men’s alone;
  • Between May 2013 and April 2014, the South was not only the largest region in terms of prestige men’s fragrance sales (40%), but it also was the top performing region, with nearly 2% growth, compared with the previous 12 month period; and
  • Juices were the primary driver of prestige men’s fragrance growth in the South during this time period, up 2%, followed by gift sets.

“Winning with consumers takes both national clout and a local flavor. While the Northeast and pacific regions often get a lot of attention, the example in men’s fragrance shows that the South is important for today’s prestige fragrance marketers,” said Karen Grant, VP and global industry analyst, The NPD Group. “Harnessing the buying power of each region — the South, North, East and West, especially during key holiday seasons — can make the difference to drive positive momentum in sales for the industry overall.”

Rite Aid increases whooping cough booster vaccine supply to all Calif. pharmacies

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid has increased supplies of the whooping cough booster vaccine, Tdap, at all 578 California locations after the California Department of Public Health reported that the number of whooping cough cases in the state has reached “epidemic proportions.”

There have been 3,458 cases of whooping cough so far in 2014 — more than were reported in all of 2013, officials have stated.

Rite Aid certified immunizing pharmacists in California can vaccinate patients ages 3 years and older against whooping cough, and more than a dozen other diseases based on CDC vaccine guidelines. Cost varies based on the patient's insurance coverage, and the Tdap vaccine is covered by many insurance plans. Tdap vaccinations are available during pharmacy hours and no appointment is necessary.

Named for the high-pitched “whooping” sound typically accompanying severe coughing fits, whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is particularly dangerous for infants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that about half of whooping cough patients under 1 year of age require hospitalization, and that getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent the bacterial infection.

Although young children typically receive the whooping cough vaccination from their primary healthcare providers as part of a regular vaccine schedule, the CDC recommends a Tdap booster dose between ages 11 years and 12 years; individuals who did not receive a Tdap booster dose at those ages should receive one as soon as possible. In addition, Tdap is recommended for healthcare professionals and anyone having close contact with a baby younger than 12 months, including grandparents, family members and child care providers. Women who are pregnant should get a Tdap immunization during every pregnancy to protect their newborn from whooping cough.

Vestiage aims to ramp up retail growth with new national VP sales

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — With a focus on expanding its retail presence, Vestiage, which creates and distributes nutraceuticals under such brands as RegiMEN for men and Monterey Bay Nutraceuticals for women, has appointed Laura Stall as national VP sales.

Prior to joining Vestiage, Stall held various positions, including VP of sales, director of consumer marketing, director of trade marketing and chain sales manager, with such companies as PepsiCo, The Pillsbury Co., Aurora Foods, MillerCoors and Twinings Teas of London.

“I am very pleased not only to have joined Vestiage earlier this year, but am now looking forward to my new position and expanded responsibility,” Stall said. “The industry has been very responsive to our RegiMEN brand and we are confident that we will be in expanded retail distribution soon. I have personally made the sales calls at major retailers such as Kroger and Select Nutrition, as well as appointed well-respected brokers to major accounts for Vestiage. We are looking forward to working with these selected broker partners to expand into the natural, drug and mass classes of business. We are positioned for growth, and I am exceedingly optimistic about the multiple benefits our products offer the consumer.”

As national VP of sales, Stall’s responsibilities include the sales and marketing aspect within the grocery, natural and other retail channels of the company’s natural, healthy-aging lines; RegiMEN for men and Monterey Bay Nutraceuticals for women. In 2014, the company started with a small retail presence. By the end of the year, the company expects to have established a national retail presence with high quality retailers.
