NPA names former FDA director Daniel Fabricant CEO

WASHINGTON — The Natural Products Association on Tuesday named Daniel Fabricant the association’s new CEO. Fabricant has worked as the director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs at the Food and Drug Administration for the past three years, and prior to that was VP global government and scientific affairs for NPA, including serving as active CEO for several months in 2009.  

“We couldn’t be more pleased that Dr. Fabricant will be returning to NPA. His service to this association in the past, coupled with the invaluable experience he has gathered at FDA, make him the perfect choice to lead our association in this era of growth,” stated NPA president Roxanne Green. “He knows the industry as well, if not better, than anyone. NPA is committed to ensuring that the public knows what is truly natural, that our members understand the complex rules and regulations governing our industry, and that policymakers get the facts. As the foremost industry expert on natural products and dietary supplement issues, Dr. Fabricant will help us achieve those goals.”

Fabricant has published extensively and is internationally recognized both for his regulatory and governmental public health expertise and natural products research. He is a sought after speaker, regular guest on national news programs and has testified before Congress. He was honored with the FDA Commissioners Award for his service on several different initiatives. His service at FDA required him to direct agency policy, public affairs and regulatory action regarding regulation of the $32 billion dietary supplement industry, a commodity used by over 180 million Americans daily.

Kinney Drugs changes name to better reflect business model

GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. — In an effort to more accurately reflect the makeup of Kinney Drugs’ diverse range of pharmacy-related health care services, the company has decided to change its name to KPH Healthcare Services.

“We believe that the name change will afford each of our divisions the best opportunity to grow business within existing markets, as well as position them for expansion into new markets,” the company said in a statement sent to Drug Store News.

The company stressed that there has been no change in the ownership structure of the company, and this name change will not affect the identity of its divisions. Each division will continue to use their current logos and will maintain their brand distinction, including the well-known Kinney Drugs name and logo long associated with its drug stores.

The KPH Healthcare Services business model includes four divisions:

  • Kinney Drugs, a chain of 100 drug stores located throughout New York and Vermont;
  • Health Direct Institutional Pharmacy Services, which services long-term care and alternative care needs;
  • ProAct Inc., a PBM company and mail-order pharmacy; and
  • Noble Health Services, a specialty pharmacy that dispenses medications used to treat complex and chronic diseases.

With U.S. Vision, Meijer to open 69 Meijer Optical centers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer on Monday announced that it has selected U.S. Vision as its exclusive vision center in its stores moving forward in an effort to enhance its retail healthcare services across the Midwest.

U.S. Vision, a separately owned and operated company based in Glendora, N.J., is currently a tenant in 50 Meijer stores in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio, and has plans to open 19 more vision centers in Meijer stores this year. All of its vision centers will be renamed “Meijer Optical” by the end of the month.

The effort enhances the retailer’s leadership in providing healthy living solutions to its customers, Meijer Drug Store VP Nat Love said. “As a family-focused company, Meijer believes in providing our customers with opportunities to address their healthcare needs in one stop,” he said. “The Meijer Optical shops will round out the robust services our stores already offer, including full-service pharmacies, health clinics and our free medication program, that meet our customers’ needs.”

U.S. Vision is a  provider of vision care products and services in the United States and Canada, and represents the sixth largest retail optical chain in the nation. Meijer began working with U.S. Vision in December 2011. 

The Meijer Optical shops are full-service vision care centers, offering brand name frames, contact lenses, sunglasses, ready-made readers and accessories. Optometrists will also be on hand to perform comprehensive eye exams. Most vision care plans are accepted.
