Navarro Discount Pharmacy expands adult vaccine offerings
MIAMI and PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — In light of new Florida regulations allowing certified pharmacists to administer a broader range of immunizations, Navarro Discount Pharmacy has expanded vaccine availability at all of its 31 locations in south Florida to include immunizations for both shingles and pneumonia, in addition to the flu vaccine.
“As a community pharmacy, we are very pleased to be able to offer these expanded vaccinations for adults, educate customers and improve their health and well-being,” stated Albert Garcia, EVP and president of Navarro Health Services. “Our certified pharmacists have undergone extensive training and are extremely knowledgeable about shingles, pneumonia and the seasonal flu, illnesses that disproportionately affect the elderly in our community.”
The Florida Department of Health recently approved new regulations giving certified pharmacists the ability to administer both Zostavax — a one-time vaccine that can reduce the risk of shingles in individuals 60 years of age and older — and Pneumovax, the pneumococcal vaccine, to help protect against pneumonia. Thousands of American adults die each year of diseases that could be prevented by vaccines.
Immunizations may be covered by insurance and customers are encouraged to contact their insurance provider for details. Navarro accepts most health insurance plans and no appointment is necessary to receive the immunizations.
With more than 80 trained clinical staff comprised of Florida registered pharmacists, Navarro Discount Pharmacy is certified for immunization through the Florida Board of Pharmacy, the retailer stated.
The pharmacist factor
It’s probably no surprise that for the 9-of-10 patients who say they have a preferred pharmacy that the pharmacist is a very important factor in choosing one pharmacy over another (37% overall), according to an exclusive survey of nearly 800 patients conducted by AccentHealth and DSN in late July and early August. It should be even less surprising that this number was even higher among patients who listed the local independent as their preferred pharmacy (54%). It is interesting to note that scores were also higher among supermarket pharmacies (37%) than traditional drug chains (34%).
Looking at the key factors patients use to choose a preferred pharmacy, No. 2 on the list is customer service, which was listed in the top three among 57% of patients; No. 6 on the list, "trust/pharmacist relationship" ranked in the top three for 22% of patients. Rx Response kicked into highest alert level as Hurricane Isaac made landfall
WASHINGTON — Rx Response, an initiative of America’s biopharmaceutical supply system to help ensure the continued flow of medicine to patients in a severe public health emergency, moved to its highest alert status last week as Hurricane Isaac made landfall in Louisiana and across the Gulf Coast.
In addition to elevating to Engaged status, Rx Response has activated an enhanced version of its Pharmacy Status Reporting Tool. The PSRT is an online program that allows emergency managers and the public to readily locate open pharmacies in communities that have been impacted by severe weather or other events. The tool was first developed by Rx Response in 2009, and the enhanced version reflects improvements made through a collaborative relationship between Walgreens and Rx Response.
Walgreens recently became the first U.S. pharmacy chain to provide status reports on its pharmacies directly to Rx Response. Previously, the PSRT only monitored electronic billing transmissions from pharmacies to insurance processing companies. When a pharmacy is transmitting electronic billing data, it is presumed open and Rx Response posts the pharmacy’s location on the PSRT‚Äôs interactive map on the www.RxResponse.org website. The direct reporting of information about the status of Walgreens pharmacies to Rx Response will enhance the timeliness of the information available to the public and emergency managers.
Rx Response is a single point of contact for the entire biopharmaceutical supply system and relies on a robust network that allows federal and state emergency management officials to communicate with Rx Response regarding pharmaceutical needs and other issues which may impact the supply system. The communications are actively monitored by all segments of the pharmaceutical supply system to ensure the fastest possible resolution.
