NACDS Foundation announces 2014-2015 Faculty Scholars Program participants

ARLINGTON, Va. – The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation today announced the participants for the 2014-2015 Faculty Scholars Program.

Eight faculty members from pharmacy schools and colleges nationwide have been selected as members of this year’s class to complete the educational program designed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, under the leadership of Melissa Somma McGivney and Kim Coley.

In its third year, the NACDS Foundation Faculty Scholars Program is designed to educate junior faculty at U.S. pharmacy schools and colleges of pharmacy about effective and meaningful community pharmacy-based patient care research.  The program also seeks to connect the faculty scholars with community pharmacy and research experts nationally to add to the diversity of their education.

The professors of pharmacy who have been awarded this year’s distinction are:

  • Allison M. Dering-Anderson, clinical assistant professor, University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy
  • Andrea Fass, assistant professor, Nova Southeastern University
  • Ashley Earley, assistant professor, Harding University College of Pharmacy
  • Kenneth C. Hohmeier, assistant professor, University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy
  • Mark A. Della Paolera, assistant professor, Pacific University School of Pharmacy
  • Michell Butler, clinical assistant professor, Mercer University College of Pharmacy
  • Nicole D. White, assistant professor, Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions
  • Sharon Rush, assistant clinical professor, University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy.

Each Faculty Scholar will identify a research mentor and small working group at his or her own college or school of pharmacy to foster interactive discussion and peer critique to assist with project development. Each will also receive a research grant to launch a patient-focused research project conducted in a community pharmacy setting.

The year-long program will utilize a variety of teaching methods including web-based lecture content, online discussion forums, regular conference call discussions, individual mentoring and live meetings, including the class’ first in-person meeting in August at the 2014 NACDS Total Store Expo in Boston.

Target announces leadership changes in U.S., Canada

MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced on Tuesday a number of leadership changes in the United States and Canada designed to further the company’s efforts to drive U.S. traffic and sales, improve its Canadian operations and advance its ongoing digital transformation.

Effective immediately, Tony Fisher, president, Target Canada, will depart the company. Mark Schindele, SVP, merchandising operations, will assume the role of president, Target Canada.

In this position, Schindele will report to Kathee Tesija, chief merchandising and supply chain officer, whose responsibilities include Target Canada.

Schindele brings 22 years of retail experience, including 15 years at Target, to the position. During his Target tenure, he has played an integral role in launching new store formats, including PFresh, CityTarget, and Target Express. He has also enhanced Target’s guest insights and analytics capabilities and led multiple business categories and vendor partnerships. In his current role, he leads a global team and provides senior-level oversight to Target’s merchandising operations, including systems, global sourcing, and product development, the company stated.

“We are grateful to Tony for leading Target’s first international launch. One of our key priorities is improving performance in Canada more rapidly and we believe it is important to be aggressive. We have a committed team who is focused on delivering an outstanding shopping experience to our Canadian guests and getting our performance on track,” stated John Mulligan, Target’s interim president and CEO. “Mark’s broad understanding of the retail industry and his record of leading global operations will help accelerate efforts to drive improvements across our Canadian business.”

Schindele will join the Target Canada leadership team, which includes:

  • Janna Adair Potts, SVP, stores and distribution
  • John Butcher, SVP, merchandising
  • Livia Zufferli, VP, marketing
  • Tiffany Monroe, VP, human resources
  • Mark Wong, general counsel

Target will also be naming a non-executive chair in Canada. In this newly created advisory role, the non-executive chair will provide counsel and support to the president of Target Canada to ensure all strategies and tactics align with the Canadian marketplace.

In the United States, Target is elevating three senior merchandising leaders and realigning the team to better leverage functional expertise as the company focuses on driving improved performance.

  • Trish Adams has been promoted to EVP, apparel and home
  • Jose Barra has been promoted to EVP, essentials and hardlines
  • Keri Jones has been promoted to EVP, merchandising planning and operations

“Moving more quickly to bring bold, innovative ideas to the marketplace will help us connect with our guests in more meaningful ways. By realigning the merchandising team we can better leverage our senior-level leaders, be more agile and deliver for our guests with a greater sense of urgency,” stated Tesija.

Target’s EVP property development to retire

MINNEAPOLIS — Target has announced that John Griffith, EVP property development, will retire on May 31.

Griffith joined Target in 1999 and played an instrumental role in growing Target’s store count from 912 stores in 1999 to more than 1,900 stores today. He also helped develop new store prototypes and formats including PFresh, CityTarget and Target Express, and designed and developed Target’s headquarters buildings worldwide, including India and Canada.

“John had a tremendous influence on Target during his 15 years with the company. The energy and enthusiasm he brought to his role helped Target expand our geographic footprint and create new store formats. Not only did John leave an impact on Target, but his passion for the Twin Cities and dedication to the preservation and enhancement of downtown Minneapolis, will be felt for years to come,” said John Mulligan, Target’s interim president and CEO.

He has agreed to serve as a consultant on Target’s engagement with economic development organizations in the Minneapolis area.
