ModiFace’s iPhone app makes debut

BY Antoinette Alexander

TORONTO — ModiFace, a provider of virtual makeover technologies, has announced the launch of its new iPhone application, dubbed "MakeUp Live," which is a virtual makeover tool.

MakeUp Live is based on the company’s facial recognition technology that powers the virtual makeup application on the iPhone. Originally launched in November 2009, MakeUp is a free beauty tool that enables users to virtually try on different types of makeup, including mascara, foundation, blush and eye shadow, in hundreds of shades from such brands as Revlon, CoverGirl, Lancome and Clinique.

MakeUp Live creates a virtual makeup mirror using the iPhone camera to apply cosmetics in real time directly onto the user’s own face. The application also gives step-by-step instructions on how to achieve one of eight beauty looks, including smoky eyes, down to the brush type and shade brand and name.

"MakeUp Live is the next best thing to having your own personal makeup artist in the room with you," stated Nikkie Gatto, mobile project manager and resident beauty expert at ModiFace. "Many magazines offer ‘how to’ guides from beauty experts around the globe, and many virtual makeover tools allow women to see different products on their own photo. However, MakeUp Live takes the beauty guide and makeover tools to an entirely different level by enabling women to work alongside the tool to get it exactly right."

The application is available for download from the iTunes store for 99 cents. For more information, visit Modiface.com.

Beiersdorf establishes Vietnam division

BY Antoinette Alexander

HAMBURG, Germany (Dec. 1) Skin care company Beiersdorf has established an independent affiliate in Vietnam called "Beiersdorf Vietnam Limited," laying the groundwork for further growth in Southeast Asia and for meeting the rising demand for skin care products in Vietnam.

From the company’s local headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) the new global Beiersdorf strategy "Focus on Skincare. Closer to Markets." will be implemented regionally to expand sales in a targeted manner. The goal is to double turnover in Vietnam by 2015.

"We have seen strong sales growth in Vietnam in the past. At this stage, further development will be easier to pilot with an independent affiliate. Our goal in Vietnam of continuing to grow significantly faster than the market will now be easier for us to reach," stated James Wei, a member of the Beiersdorf executive board with responsibility for the Asian operation. "Now we can adapt Nivea products even more closely to the specific needs of Vietnamese consumers and react faster to local market trends. Nivea already holds leading positions in numerous product categories and is the undisputed market leader for body care, deodorants and men’s care products. These market positions are a solid basis for further growth."

Beiersdorf has been represented by a representative office in Vietnam since 2004, and expanded its skin care business since that time. Nivea is available in more than 40,000 stores in the cities, as well as in rural areas. All products are imported from the Nivea plant in Thailand.
