Miami to host its third annual Walk with Walgreens Family Fun Day and Health Fair
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Step by step, Walgreens of South Florida and the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation on Tuesday announced the third annual Walk with Walgreens Family Fun Day and Health Fair, which takes place April 20 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, home to both the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Hurricanes football teams.
Walgreens market VP Roy Ripak and DRI Foundation president and CEO Robert Pearlman invite all of South Florida to walk side by side with them on April 20. They extend special thanks to presenting sponsors Listerine, Neutrogena Suncare and Zyrtec for their support.
To date, the group has raised more than $700,000 in support of diabetes research.
Additionally, throughout April, "scannables" in the amounts of $1, $5 and $10 will be for sale in Walgreens stores from Port St. Lucie down through the Florida Keys. All proceeds will benefit the Diabetes Research Institute at UM’s Miller School of Medicine
New to the event this year, the Keep Believin’ Half Marathon to Cure Diabetes and a 5K Run, organized by Multirace, will coincide with the Walk. The courses for each will end on the field of Sun Life Stadium, where participants can see their faces on the video board. Activities on the field include: a Gatorade Junior Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins, vintage car show, bounce houses, carnival games and a sand castle exhibition. Miami Dolphins alumnus Joe Rose will kick off the event and be joined by other Dolphins Alumni throughout the day. Radio icon John "Footy" Kross will serve as emcee.
S.C. health and human services director tours MinuteClinic location
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A MinuteClinic location at a CVS store in downtown Columbia, S.C., got a visit from one of the state’s top health officials recently.
South Carolina state Department of Health and Human Services director Tony Keck got a tour of the clinic from Andrew Sussman, president of MinuteClinic and SVP and associate chief medical officer of CVS Caremark. Keck helped initiate a plan to include MinuteClinic as a provider of care in order to increase access for Medicaid recipients and to make South Carolina a model in retail health; MinuteClinic accepts all South Carolina Medicaid plans.
"While we urge beneficiaries to call or visit their primary care physician first, we understand that for many of our working parents, minor medical treatment may be necessary to access when these offices are closed," Keck said. "Expanding Medicaid coverage to CVS MinuteClinic adds accessibility and flexibility for our beneficiaries to receive immediate medical treatment, thereby strengthening our commitment to delivering increasingly high-quality care for our citizens."
MinuteClinic’s first Columbia location opened in 2008, and the company has since expanded to include clinics in the Greenville-Spartanburg, Charleston and Myrtle Beach areas of the state.
