HDMA fetes leading drug, consumer product makers at inaugural business leadership event
ORLANDO, Fla. The wholesale drug industry’s leading trade group tapped 10 pharmaceutical and consumer product manufacturers this week for its annual Distribution Industry Awards for Notable Achievements in Healthcare, also known as the DIANA awards.
The Healthcare Distribution Management Association unveiled the honors at its inaugural Business & Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., extending a tradition that dates back to the first DIANA awards presented in 1959. The 2010 winners, said HDMA president and CEO John Gray, “demonstrate an abiding commitment to innovation and collaboration.”
This year’s honors went to several large-scale and smaller pharmaceutical manufacturers, as well as a drug packaging solutions provider. Said Gray, “These winning companies have shown creativity in introducing new products and services and establishing successful partnerships with their distributor peers in a way that benefits not just the healthcare supply chain but also the patient.”
Among the suppliers tapped for awards were Novo Nordisk, whose Victoza Expedited Distribution was named best new pharmaceutical product introduction in the branded category. Top honors for the best generic drug introduction went to Sandoz for its Tacrolimus product.
Among other winners:
- Rexam PLC, which received an award in the “Rx Support Systems, Supplies and Service Products” category for its lightweight sustainable prescription package;
- Novartis Consumer Health’s 24-hour Prevacid, which won for best new consumer product introduction; and
- Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Upsher-Smith Labs, Watson Labs, Amneal Pharmaceuticals, Merck Consumer Care and Broadway Industries, which were awarded Best Overall Manufacturer awards.
Finalists for DIANA awards included Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Silarx Pharmaceuticals, Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Zydus Pharmaceuticals USA, Covidien-Mallinckrodt, Salix Pharmaceuticals, ISTA Pharmaceuticals, Forest Pharmaceuticals and Boehringer Ingelheim. Besides winning top honors in their respective categories, Novartis and Upsher-Smith also were finalists in two “Best Overall Manufacturer Awards” categories.
The 2010 DIANA judging panel is made up of HDMA distributor members. Best Overall Manufacturer winners were judged on such criteria as developing collaborative trading partner relationships to creating marketing programs that benefit the supply chain and an overall commitment to excellence. Best New Product Introduction or Promotion winners were selected based on such criteria as innovative marketing programs, market performance, promotional support and operational excellence, according to HDMA.
Survey: Consumers listen to pharmacists for OTC buys
WASHINGTON —Pharmacists believe that 82% of consumers purchase over-the-counter products that actually were recommended to them by a pharmacist, according to the most recent “Pharmacy Today Over-the-Counter Product Survey” conducted by the American Pharmacists Association.
The survey, completed by more than 1,000 APhA member and nonmember pharmacists, also found that pharmacists counsel 29 patients on average per week around the use of nonprescription medicines. Patients who seek their pharmacist’s advice include patients requiring assistance in identifying the most appropriate product (90%), patients that are worried about using an OTC product with other prescription medications (80%), patients suffering from an acute or chronic condition (79%) and patients worried about taking OTC products with a specific disease/condition (65%).
“Pharmacists are the medication experts on the healthcare team,” stated Thomas Menighan, APhA CEO. “[They] are trained not only about prescription medications, but also nonprescription medications, supplements and herbals.”
One of APhA’s goals in conducting the annual “Pharmacy Today Over-the-Counter Product Survey” is to educate consumers that pharmacists have the knowledge and training to help them select the right OTC medications. As part of the survey, pharmacists are asked to tabulate the OTC products they recommend per week in 76 different product categories.
As part of the survey, pharmacists were asked how many times per week they had recommended each product. Those brands that indexed higher than 60% among pharmacist recommendations included: Procter & Gamble’s Crest Whitestrips (87%); GlaxoSmithKline’s Breathe Right (74%); Amerifit Brands’ AZO Test Strips (UTI test) (72%); Church & Dwight’s First Response (ovulation test kits) (70%); McNeil Consumer’s Sudafed (70%); Omron blood pressure monitors (70%); and Reckitt Benckiser’s Mucinex family of products (63%).
Industry divided over proposed PBM restrictions
WASHINGTON —A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives last month aims to increase requirements for pharmacy benefit managers and has angered PBMs while drawing praise from independent pharmacies.
H.R. 5234, the PBM Audit Reform and Transparency Act of 2010, introduced by Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York, would forbid PBMs that own pharmacies, or vice versa, from requiring patients to use their pharmacies or providing them with incentives to use them. It also would require them to give pharmacies a 15-day prior notice of audits, offer a written appeals process and limit audit periods to one year, and restrict their ability to share utilization and claims data. In addition, it would place new restrictions on their ability to share utilization and claims data, such as requiring them to notify health plans and insurers of their intent to share the data and disclose the name of the organization with which data are being shared, as well as allowing individual beneficiaries to opt out.
Independent pharmacy lobbying group the National Community Pharmacists Association heralded the bill. “This legislation would begin to rein in many of the dubious and opaque PBM practices that pad their burgeoning profits at the expense of patients, plan sponsors and local pharmacists,” NCPA president and Arlington, Texas, pharmacy owner Joseph Harmison said. “If this bill is enacted, PBMs would find it much harder to pad profits through hidden costs, to steer patients away from their pharmacy of choice and toward PBM mail-order pharmacies, and to punitively audit pharmacies. Ultimately, this proposal is about fixing the complex, broken system that PBMs have put in place to make billions of dollars while leaving patients and health-plan sponsors paying the bill and scratching their heads.”
The NCPA has shown little affection for PBMs, saying they have transformed “from simple claim processors to mammoth drug middlemen” that operate without transparency or regulation and whose profits have increased several times over the past decade as a result, in part by collecting rebates from drug manufacturers in exchange for favoring certain drugs over others.
Not surprisingly, the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association, the country’s largest lobbying group for PBMs, attacked the bill and the NCPA’s role in it, albeit without referring to the NCPA by name. “Unfortunately, the independent drug store lobby continues to push an agenda that increases prescription drug costs for consumers and payers and limits efforts to root out fraud, waste and abuse,” a statement released by the organization read. “Given the increased focus on controlling healthcare costs, we can’t afford to let anyone, including the independent pharmacy lobby, thwart congressional efforts to fight pharmacy fraud.”
The PCMA said PBMs provided such services as incentives for the use of generic drugs, electronic prescribing and mail-order pharmacies that improved safety, savings and access for payers and patients, and said that use of PBM services in Medicare Part D reduced the program’s expenditures by 43%. “Since the key to access is affordability, payers and policy-makers alike should explore broader use of PBMs’ cost-savings tools and reject approaches that make prescription drugs more expensive,” the PCMA’s statement read. According to a letter the group sent to Department of Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, the bill would mandate that PBMs contract with pharmacies currently banned from participating in federal programs, oppose the Office of the Inspector General’s ability to prosecute pharmacists charged with a felony, require a lengthy waiting period to remove a pharmacy from a network despite “irrefutable” evidence of fraud and exempt independents from routine accreditation requirements to sell durable medical equipment.
