Giant Eagle pledges to reduce water consumption in honor of Earth Day

PITTSBURGH – Multi-format food, fuel and pharmacy retailer, Giant Eagle is celebrating Earth Day this year with a commitment to reduce water consumption by 5% by July 2017, resulting in an anticipated conservation of millions of gallons of water. 
 
"Giant Eagle has long been dedicated to conserving natural resources through the implementation of environmentally-minded business practices," stated Shelly Sponholz, Giant Eagle SVP real estate and development. "We feel that it is important to be environmentally conscious, not only on Earth Day, but throughout the year. It is with this mentality that we operate 12 LEED-certified retail locations, have converted nearly half of our distribution fleet to CNG powered vehicles and recycle more than 700 tons of plastic bags annually."
 
In addition to conservation efforts being put in place throughout Giant Eagle supermarkets, the company's WetGo car wash locations utilize water reclamation systems in order to make quality car washing more environmentally friendly. A single car wash at WetGo uses approximately 50 percent fewer gallons of fresh water than typical car washes.

Kmart introduces Pharmacy Rewards Program

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Kmart and Shop Your Way have unveiled the new Shop Your Way Pharmacy Rewards Program that gives members $10 back in points (10,000 points) for every five qualifying prescriptions filled in a rolling 12-month period.

"We listened to our members and transformed the Kmart pharmacy rewards program to better fit their needs," stated Phil Keough, president, Kmart pharmacy.  "Our pharmacy rewards program gives members the flexibility and value that Kmart can provide.  And, with our unmatched focus on community, healthcare innovation and personalized attention, we truly are providing maximum value for our members."

Shop Your Way members earn points every time they fill five qualifying prescriptions, including pet prescriptions and immunizations. Some features include:

  • Automatic Updates: Each time a member fills a qualified prescription at Kmart Pharmacy using a Shop Your Way account number or the phone number associated with the account, progress toward their next reward is tracked automatically.
  • Availability: Once received, Pharmacy Reward points are usually available for members to redeem during the next transaction following their prescription purchase. Once awarded, reward points are valid for 14 days.
  • Point Redemption: Reward points can be redeemed for qualifying non-pharmacy merchandise at any Kmart or Sears, both in-store and online.
  • Pharmacy Reward Tracking: Rewards can be tracked three ways: 1) members can login at kmartpharmacy.com/rewards, 2) a receipt will be printed tracking each prescription purchase at checkout and 3) members can opt in for email updates.
  • Limitless Rewards: There is no limit to the number of pharmacy rewards a member can earn in a rolling year. The more prescriptions filled, the more rewards earned.

Kmart Pharmacy noted that it also provides members and customers more than a prescription fulfillment service, including:

  • Pharmacists are trained in medication therapy and are all certified to provide a full range of immunization services.
  • Access to health and wellness deals from Kmart partners like JillianMichaels.com, Lose It!, Snap Fitness, Care.com, Doctor on Demand and American Well.
  • A mobile app to make it easier for customers to manage their prescriptions on the go. In 2015, Kmart Pharmacy is adding new features that will include reminders for when a prescription is ready to be picked up, when to take medication or when a refill is due.

Study: Data breach exposure is getting worse

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — It’s not just media hype — retailers’ exposure to data breaches really is getting worse. According to the 2015 Internet Threat Report from security technology provider Symantec, 11% of all data breaches Symantec recorded in 2014 hit retailers.
 
Only the healthcare industry represented a larger share of breaches. In addition, retailers provided a leading 59% of all identities revealed in breaches during 2014. Total breach incidents during the year rose 23% compared to 2013.
 
Symantec research also reveals that it took software companies an average of 59 days to create and roll out patches, up from only four days in 2013. There were 24 total “zero-day” vulnerabilities, or software security gaps that hackers exploited the same day they were discovered, tracked in 2014.
 
Additionally, Symantec observed attackers:
 
• Using stolen email accounts from one corporate victim to “spear-phish” other victims higher up the food chain;
 
• Taking advantage of companies’ management tools and procedures to move stolen IP around the corporate network before exfiltration;
 
• Building custom attack software inside the network of their victims to further disguise their activities.
 
In addition, “ransomware” attacks where hackers take over a victim’s computer and refuse to return control until they receive payment, rose 113% in 2014. Notably, there were 45 times more victims of crypto-ransomware attacks than in 2013. Instead of pretending to be law enforcement seeking a fine for stolen content, crypto-ransomware attack style holds a victim’s files, photos and other digital content hostage without masking the attacker’s intention.
