Getting to know Lewis Drug’s ‘new face’
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Welcome to Louise Avenue in Sioux Falls, S.D. — the home of the “new face” of Lewis Drug.
Here within this new store, consumers will experience a larger, revamped pharmacy department with wood flooring, lifestyle images and a waiting area with televisions and refreshments. The beauty area has a more upscale look and feel, and there’s also a walk-in cooler that runs about 100 linear ft. and houses both beverages and adult beverages, including mini-kegs and chilled wine.
Perhaps the most unique part of the store is the “Four Seasons” department, a 4,000-sq.-ft. environmentally controlled room for seasonal businesses like home and garden. It has a watering system and a roof that opens in warmer months to let in the direct sunlight, with a sensor that can anticipate rain and close the roof automatically before rainfall.

USDA, HHS reveal revamped dietary guidelines
WASHINGTON — Addressing the obesity epidemic in the United States, the Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services unveiled the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
DGA can help Americans maximize the nutritional content of their meals by providing advice for making food choices that promote good health, a healthy weight and prevent disease for healthy Americans ages 2 years and older, the USDA and HHS said. Key recommendations include:
Balancing calories to maintain a healthy weight;
Building healthy eating patterns;
Cutting back on sodium-heavy foods and foods with added sugars and fats;
Incorporating nutrient-dense foods into one’s diet, including fruits and vegatables; and
Recommendations for pregnant women and individuals older than 50 years.
“The 2010 Dietary Guidelines are being released at a time when the majority of adults and 1-in-3 children is overweight or obese, and this is a crisis that we can no longer ignore,” said agriculture secretary Tom Vilsack. “These new and improved dietary recommendations give individuals the information to make thoughtful choices of healthier foods in the right portions, and to complement those choices with physical activity.”

Kmart, Steve Harvey help ‘share the word’ on Black History Month
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Kmart announced that it is teaming up with comedian Steve Harvey for its Share the Word campaign celebrating Black History Month.
According to the company, this year’s installment of the Share the Word program was designed to spotlight the unique bonds found in black communities that historically have driven the progression of African-Americans.
Kmart announced that this year it is offering customers the chance to win a Kmart-sponsored block party with an appearance by Harvey. Entries will be accepted until Feb. 18, and a final winner will be selected in the beginning of March. As additional incentive to apply for the block party, Kmart said it also will donate $100 for every entry received to the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program, up to $25,000.
Kmart said it also is partnering with Dress for Success, an international not-for-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.
In conjunction with Dress for Success, Kmart will host two in-store events: one featuring Harvey on Feb. 12 in Memphis, and the second on Feb. 15 in Charlotte, N.C. Both events will include style advice and consultations from Dress for Success reps and local stylists, as well as special day-long discounts for Dress for Success attendees. The event in Memphis also will include an autograph session with Harvey.
"Kmart’s Share the Word program is a great way to empower African-American communities," Harvey said. "They not only listen to what their customers want, but they also do whatever they can to support [the customers], and their contribution to my foundation and Dress for Success are true examples of that."
Kmart’s Share the Word website will launch on Feb. 1, offering links to blog posts as well as relevant sales and promotions available at Kmart stores. Customers also will be able to enter the block party contest through the site.
