Fresh & Easy opens three new stores in California
FRESNO, Calif. A regional supermarket chain announced the opening of four new stores.
Fresh & Easy said Thursday it is opening three stores is Fresno, Calif., which will revive the city’s downtown area. These openings are the first in decades, the company said. While one store opened Jan. 14, the other two will follow next month, specifically, Feb. 3 and Feb. 24.
“Fresh & Easy is excited to be a part of the revitalization of downtown Fresno because everyone deserves access to fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices,” said Fresh & Easy CEO Tim Mason. “We are thrilled at the wonderful reception we have received from our new neighbors in this wonderful community.”
Fresh & Easy has also made it a priority to lessen its impact on the environment – on average, Fresh & Easy stores use 30% less energy than a typical supermarket and utilize technologies like solar tracking skylights, automatically dimming lights, and LED lighting. Fresh & Easy recycles or reuses all its shipping and display materials and uses environmentally-friendly trailers to transport food. The company is a pilot member of the LEED Volume Certification Program and has invested in a 500,000-sq.-ft. solar roof installation on its distribution center in Riverside, California.
Fresh & Easy operates stores in Souther California, Arizona and Nevada.
NCR survey provides insight for retailers regarding consumers’ use of social media
DULUTH, Ga. Shoppers are looking for enhanced personalization and more choices in how they interact with retailers through social media, according to a recent survey conducted by global technology company NCR.
The NCR survey polled more than 400,000 consumers regarding their experiences with social media and how retailers can better serve their needs.
“Social media is an exciting way for retailers to engage customers and build communities of interest around their brand,” said Sundeep Kapur, director, strategic marketing, NCR Corp. “The survey results demonstrate that retailers who present a holistic understanding of their customers and deliver more personalized, relevant offers through social media can open new revenue channels and see a greater return on investment through social media.”
In response to this, NCR, through its Aptra eMarketing initiative, optimizes the way businesses communicate with their customers and clients by controlling the relevance, personalization and timing of marketing messages via a specific choice of medium.

Researchers find key to chemotherapy resistance in lung cancer patients
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Researchers in Arizona have found a way to predict which patients might be resistant to first-line chemotherapy in the treatment of small-cell lung cancer, calling their findings a breakthrough in the treatment of lung cancer.
Of the 32,000 cases of SCLC patients diagnosed each year in the United States, between 15% and 30% are resistant to the treatment, a condition known as chemoresistance.
The researchers, at TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare looked at tumor microRNAs, molecules that regulate gene expression in the process of making proteins and directing the structure and function of cells, a process that usually prevents cancer, finding three that appeared to predict which patients would be chemoresistant. The researchers hope the findings will go toward developing better clinical drug trials.
“For patients with small-cell lung cancer, there are really only about two chemotherapy options,” researcher Glen Weiss said in a statement. “We need to be more precise with our treatments and identify who is going to be resistant up front in order to design better clinical trials that will identify effective therapies for these at-risk patients.”
The researchers plan to present their findings at a joint conference of the American Association for Cancer Research and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer in San Diego.
