Former Google executive to serve as keynote speaker at PLMA trade show

NEW YORK — The Private Label Manufacturers Association announced that Douglas Merrill will serve as the keynote speaker for the organization’s 2011 Private Label Trade Show in November.

Merrill, who served as EVP engineering and chief information officer for Google from 2003 to 2008, will offer attendees perspective on how shoppers and shopping behaviors are changing, and what the coming retail marketplace will look like. The keynote speech will be presented at the annual PLMA Salute to Excellence Breakfast on Nov. 14.

In related news, Harry Balzer, NPD’s chief industry analyst, will be the featured speaker at a special PLMALive Breakfast to be held on Nov. 15, where he will discuss new and emerging trends for the U.S. food retailing industry. A webcast of the breakfast program and presentation also will be made available for viewing over PLMALive, PLMA said.

The PLMA’s 2011 Private Label Trade Show will be held from Nov. 13 to 15 in Chicago at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. For show information, click here.

Gurwitch Products names VP global communications

NEW YORK — Gurwitch Products, the prestige cosmetics company whose portfolio includes Laura Mercier and RéVive brands, has announced the appointment of Kim Waite as VP global communications.
 
Waite will manage all aspects of communications for the Laura Mercier and RéVive brands, supporting product launches, special events, celebrity initiatives, alliances and corporate responsibility initiatives. She will manage all of Gurwitch’s domestic and global PR agencies. Waite will report to Gurwitch chief marketing officer Ellen Greenwald.
 
Previously, Waite was head of global public relations for the mark division of Avon, where she led the public relations strategy for mark and managed m.powerment by mark, brand ambassadors, industry experts and overall relationships. Prior to that, Waite served as director of global communications for Stila Cosmetics and public relations Director at Shu Uemura Cosmetics.

NEW YORK — Red Carpet Manicure is bringing the professional salon experience to the mass market with its new at-home LED gel polish manicure and pedicure system.

Launching nationwide at Ulta in early September, Red Carpet Manicure officially unveiled the innovative gel nail polish system to beauty editors at a press event Wednesday in New York.

A full system costs $57.94 or just $2.90 each for 20 at-home applications compared with an average of $40 for each professional application in a salon.

Step 2: Care and color

  • Structure base coat gel ($9.99);

  • LED gelpolish (available in 36 shades for $9.99 each); and

  • Brilliance seal and shine top coat ($9.99),

Step 3: Finish

  • Revitalize nourishing cuticle oil ($3.99); and

  • Purify pre and post application cleanser ($3.99).

Step 4: Removal

  • Erase gel nail polish remover ($3.99)

The system also includes an exclusive portable LED light ($19.99) or a Pro:45 LED light ($49.99) that cures the gel polish in seconds for weeks of wear.

Beauty mavens also can get started with a starter kit featuring the professional light ($79.99) or a starter kit with the portable light ($59.99). There’s also an accessories kit (cuticle pusher, buffer tabs, emery board and orangewood stick) for $3.99.
