FDA approves Mylan hypertension drug

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for treating high blood pressure made by Mylan, FDA records showed.

The FDA approved Mylan’s metoprolol succinate tablets in the 25-mg, 50-mg, 100-mg and 200-mg strengths.

The drug is a generic version of AstraZeneca’s Toprol-XL.

FDA approves new labeling for ViroPharma’s Vancocin

EXTON, Pa. — ViroPharma has received approval for updated labeling to its antibiotic drug.

The drug maker announced that the Food and Drug Administration approved the "modernization" of labeling for Vancocin (vancomycin hydrochloride) capsules. The new label includes clinical safety and efficacy data for the drug in treatment strains of Clostridium difficile bacteria currency circulating.

"This new label provides physicians a better understanding about how to treat and monitor patients suffering from the serious and often life-threatening infections that require oral Vancocin therapy," ViroPharma president and CEO Vincent Milano said.

Medbox acquires Prescription Vending Machines

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Medbox has acquired Prescription Vending Machines and will operate it as a wholly owned subsidiary, Medbox said.

Founded in 2008, Prescription Vending Machines makes a biometric medicine dispensing system that can dispense drugs available form pharmacies, doctors’ offices, hospitals, urgent care centers and alternative medicine clinics. The company has installed more than 100 machines and point of sale systems worldwide.

Financial details of the acquisition were not given, but Prescription Vending Machines has had more than $6 million in sales since 2010.
