Dr. Sears Family Essentials boosts Cool Fuel line

BY Michael Johnsen

IRVINE, Calif. — Dr. Sears Family Essentials on Tuesday announced the flavor line extension of its Cool Fuel ready-to-drink shakes, adding chocolate banana to its lineup.

"Dr. Sears Family Essentials is committed to helping combat the national epidemic of childhood obesity and Nutritional Deficit Disorder — a term coined by Dr. Bill Sears that refers to the overall lack of nutritional value in most childhood diets today," Dr. Sears Family Essentials VP marketing Roeya Badri Vaughan said. "Pediatrician-developed and kid-approved, Cool Fuel provides a convenient and healthy snack option for cool kids and cool moms who want the best for their children."

Formulated with 18 essential nutrients and antioxidants, Cool Fuel contains omega-3 DHA and 60% less sugar than such conventional offerings as PediaSure, the company stated. Cool Fuel is available as a four-pack of individual, on-the-go 8-oz. servings, for a suggested retail price of $8.99.

Dr. Sears Family Essentials products are available nationwide at The Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods, independent natural health retailers and major regional grocery retailers, including H-E-B, Meijer and Fred Meyer, across the United States. They also are available online at AskDrSears.com and DrSearsFamilyEssentials.com.

V8 enters energy market

BY Michael Johnsen

CAMDEN, N.J. — Campbell Soup on Tuesday announced the company is expanding its V8 franchise into the fast-growing energy drink category with two new products: V8 V-Fusion + Energy drinks and V8 Energy Shots.

Sales of energy shots reached $173.9 million across food, drug and mass (minus Walmart) for the 52 weeks ended April 17, representing growth of 43.5% compared with the prior year, according to SymphonyIRI Group data.

Campbell will be positioning its V8 brands as healthier alternatives to most energy drinks on the market today. Each nutritious beverage will provide one combined serving of vegetables and fruit, as well as green tea extract, which provides a natural energy boost. “We are branching into the energy drink market with the kinds of nutritious beverages that V8 is known to deliver,” V8 Beverages VP Dale Clemiss said. “People can now feel good about drinking an energy drink or shot with a combined serving of vegetables and fruit and powered naturally by green tea.”

V8 V-Fusion + Energy drinks already are available in 2,400 Walmart stores beginning this month. The drinks are available in 8-oz. slim cans in two flavors, pomegranate/blueberry and peach/mango, for $3.98 for a six-pack. For a limited time, select locations will offer two cans for $1, while supplies last.

V8 Energy Shots are available at participating convenience stores, supermarkets and drug stores in Colorado, Florida and Minnesota for the suggested retail price of $2.99 per 2.5-oz. shot and $4.99 for a two-pack.

BY Michael Johnsen

PRINCETON, N.J. — Church & Dwight and hip-hop artist Chris “Ludacris” Bridges on Friday named the five winners of the Magnum "Live Large" Project 2. The emcees, voted in by users on YouTube, performed live on stage with Ludacris in front of 20,000 fans at Miami’s Spring Fest music festival this past Sunday.

Rappers Marv Won from Detroit; PH from Brooklyn, N.Y.; LMS from Miami; Prince EA of St. Louis; and Dirtbag Dan from San Jose, Calif., beat out nearly 1,800 emcees to be crowned this year’s champions. "I know first-hand how it was being an aspiring artist, and I’m a firm believer in the Magnum ‘Live Large’ Project and the opportunity the makers of Magnum condoms are giving these emcees," Ludacris said.

Church & Dwight this spring sponsored emcee competitions in Detroit, San Francisco, New York and Miami, calling on aspiring rappers to come out and compete. The artists competed live and the top three rappers from each city were selected to appear on YouTube for a national vote to uncover the top rapper in each region.
