Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2014 passes House, supported by supplement industry

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Monday praised the U.S. House of Representatives for its passage of the Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2014 (H.R. 4771), introduced by Reps. Joe Pitts, R-Pa., and Frank Pallone, D-N.J.
 
H.R. 4771, the companion bill to S. 2012 that was introduced in the Senate earlier this year, would give the Drug Enforcement Administration additional authority to identify and quickly respond when new designer anabolic steroids are falsely marketed as dietary supplements. CRN has been highly engaged in bipartisan discussions with legislators in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, emphasizing the importance of DASCA to consumers and responsible industry alike. 
 
“CRN thanks Reps. Pitts and Pallone for their leadership in promoting DASCA among their House colleagues and congratulates the House of Representatives on passage of this important bill,” stated Mike Greene, VP government relations, CRN. “If DASCA is passed by Congress and signed into law by the president, DEA’s enhanced authority would help protect consumers from illegal products that could present safety concerns and will give them greater confidence that the products brought to market and sold as dietary supplements are legal. We urge the Senate to follow suit and expedite DASCA’s enactment.”

Walgreens Boots Alliance files registration statement with SEC

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday announced that Walgreens Boots Alliance, the anticipated new holding company for the combined Walgreens and Alliance Boots enterprise, filed a registration statement on Form S-4 with the Securities and Exchange Commission containing a preliminary proxy statement/prospectus related to Walgreens acquisition of the remaining 55% of Alliance Boots that the company doesn’t currently own and the reorganization of Walgreens into a holding company structure.
 
The new holding company to be formed in connection with the transaction, Walgreens Boots Alliance, will be incorporated in the state of Delaware and headquartered in the Chicago area. The Walgreen Co. division of Walgreens Boots Alliance will remain incorporated in Illinois and headquartered in Deerfield, Ill., and the Boots division will remain based at its current location in Nottingham, U.K. 
 
Walgreens will hold a special shareholders meeting to seek approval of the transactions and related matters in connection with Step 2 and the holding company reorganization following completion of the SEC review process and after the Registration Statement has been declared effective by the SEC. Also as described in the Registration Statement, the company currently intends to as "promptly as practicable" announce an anticipated date for an annual meeting of shareholders of Walgreens Boots Alliance during its fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 2015, which is currently intended to be held following the completion of the transactions.

Nielsen celebrates Hispanic consumers with video vignettes

NEW YORK – In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Nielsen on Monday announced its series of video vignettes celebrating the Hispanic consumer. The Conscious Consumer vignettes feature Hispanics from diverse backgrounds speaking about how they combine their power as consumers with their heritage to create a meaningful impact in their respective communities. Nielsen defines a conscious consumer as a responsible shopper, one who researches companies prior to making a purchase; and a person who is a social change agent for their communities. 
 
The videos also highlight key insights from Nielsen's Latina Power Shift, Upscale Latinos 2.0, Listen Up: Hispanic and Music and The Cross-Platform Report, September 2014.
 
"These video vignettes feature real consumers who share personal stories about how their consumer behaviors are deeply influenced by their rich Hispanic culture," stated Stacie de Armas, VP community alliances, events and engagement, Nielsen. "These stories help illustrate the power of the conscious consumer through their vantage point." 
 
At 54 million, Hispanics are the largest self-identifying and fastest growing ethnic group in the United States, representing 17% of the total population. This group has become more affluent, well educated, geographically concentrated and technologically savvy, according to Nielsen's insights.
 
The Conscious Consumer vignettes will be released every Monday during Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, on Nielsen's Multicultural YouTube channel and social media outlets. Nielsen will be tweeting about the video series @NielsenKnows using #ConsciousConsumer.
