CDC: Influenza rates continue to drop nationwide, though flu incidence is picking up in the West

BY Michael Johnsen

ATLANTA — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday reported a slight drop in influenza-like illnesses across the country, but even so the season is still going strong. The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness for the week ended Jan. 12 was 4.6%, above the national baseline of 2.2%

Thirty states and New York City reported high ILI activity; 10 states experienced moderate activity; 7 states experienced low activity; and 3 states experienced minimal activity. That gives an indication as to the severity of the flu. Geographically, 48 states reported widespread influenza activity.

A look at CDC’s interactive map shows ILI severity picking up slightly in the West. Below, CDC’s ILI indicator map for the week ended Jan. 5 is followed by CDC’s map for the week ended Jan. 12.

CDC also depicted the progress of this year’s flu season as compared to years past.

Topical Biomedics names winner of second annual Topricin Travel Photo Contest

BY Michael Johnsen

RHINEBECK, N.Y. — Topical BioMedics on Thursday named the winners of their second annual Topricin Travel Photo Contest.

The company asked customers to snap photographs of “Where in the World” they take the topical pain reliever Topricin. Fans answered the call by providing images from around the globe.

Winners were selected based on photo composition, creativity and product presence.

The grand prize was awarded to Mike and Carrie Kinison of Haines, Alaska, for their clever and fun image of  “Topricin after a friendly mauling” featuring Carrie surrounded by their pack of  dogs, holding a jar of Topricin above her head. This is the second year in a row the Kinisons won top prize. Last year’s award-winning photo featured Mike panning for gold in Nome, stating “Topricin is worth more than its weight in gold.”

As the Grand prizewinners, the Kinisons receive a year’s supply of Topricin — a 4 oz. jar delivered each month.

A video montage featuring all the “Where in the World is Topricin” contest entries can be seen on the company web site www.topricin.com

“’Where in the World is Topricin’ is a popular contest, and we’ll be looking forward to holding it again, starting Feb. 1, 2013," stated Lou Paradise, Topical BioMedics president and chief of research.

STS Health launches FluNada nasal spray

BY Michael Johnsen

RESTON, Va. — STS Health on Thursday announced the launch of its homeopathic cold and flu symptom reliever FluNada.

"After years of intensive research and testing, this natural spray product has been developed to offer a new era of relief from common cold and flu-like symptoms," stated Steven Schwartz, who invented the product. "Each of the active ingredients integrated into the spray was chosen based on the specific health characteristics it provides. In addition, it was important to develop a product that was 100% free of zinc."

The spray product contains a multi-layered proprietary blend of homeopathic ingredients, including elderberry, eucalyptus and mint. The formula aids in the relief of runny or blocked nose, body aches and pains, sore throat, or cough.

Each $19.95 bottle contains 40 doses of five sprays each; three sprays to the back of the throat and one to each nostril.
