Annual NCSL Summit promises to offer insight, advice on healthcare system

BY Allison Cerra

ALEXANDRIA, Va. The Alliance for Pharmaceutical Care will offer health screenings and present information on vital healthcare issues at “Pharmacist Centrals,” the Alliance’s exhibition at the National Conference of State Legislatures 2009 Legislative Summit, from July 20 to 24 in Philadelphia, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores said in a release.

The Alliance for Pharmaceutical Care is a consortium of nine national organizations working together to educate the public, policy makers and other key decision makers about the important role that pharmacists play in the ever-evolving healthcare system.

Continuing a long tradition, pharmacists will perform health screenings and patient counseling, focusing on blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, bone density, body fat analysis, respiratory screening, and heartburn awareness.  Pharmacists also will be available to provide medication reviews for state legislators. Participants are invited to bring a list of all current medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and herbal/dietary supplements.

Prescription medications play an increasingly vital role in modern healthcare, and new medications continue to improve health outcomes and quality of life in patients with both acute and chronic diseases. Pharmacists, our nation’s medication experts, are on the frontlines advancing patient care, improving patient safety, and utilizing technology to improve patient outcomes, NACDS said in a statement.

The Alliance will provide insight on valuable initiatives and programs that can increase access, reduce costs, and improve overall patient care and healthcare outcomes.

OSI Pharmaceuticals, Genentech announce results of Tarceva trial

BY Alaric DeArment

MELVILLE, N.Y. A drug used to treat non-small cell lung cancer and pancreatic cancers extended the survival of patients with advanced NSCLC taking it immediately after chemotherapy, according to results of a late-stage clinical study.

OSI Pharmaceuticals and Genentech announced the results of a phase 3 trial of Tarceva (erlotinib), which they will present at the 13th World Congress on Lung Cancer, on Aug. 4 in San Francisco.

“This study has now not only confirmed that immediate treatment of Tarceva after initial chemotherapy delayed the progression of disease, but also importantly helped patients in the study live longer,” principal investigator Federico Cappuzzo of the Instituto Clinico Humanitas IRCCS in Milan, Italy, said. “This is good news for doctors and their patients, since advanced lung cancer is one of the most challenging cancers to treat and is often associated with a very short life expectancy.”
