And the winner is …

Winners of the 2012 Pharmacy of the Year awards will be announced live at McKesson ideaShare at a special evening ceremony, Monday, June 25, at the Venetian Resort Hotel in Las Vegas.  McKesson’s annual awards recognize leading independent pharmacies for the exceptional healthcare contributions they have made to their communities over the past year.

McKesson’s Pharmacy of the Year award winners are selected based on performance against several important criteria, including customer educational programs, the use of technology to increase efficiencies and ensure accuracy, product selection, in-store programs and design.  

Last year’s grand prize for overall excellence was awarded to Birch Health Mart Pharmacy in Tooele, Utah. In addition to running a successful business, Birch Health Mart — owned and operated by Sheldon Birch — was selected for its active collaboration with other healthcare providers to address the increasing occurrence of diabetes in the community. 

Since partnering with McKesson in 2007, Birch Health Mart Pharmacy has been able to grow and serve the expanding needs of its community. Last year, Birch worked with McKesson to design and build a state-of-the-art Health Mart pharmacy that includes a drive-through window and automated dispensing technology. By leveraging Health Mart’s front-end solutions, Birch has captured significant revenue from over-the-counter and private-label sales.

As an encore, Birch recently opened its second store and is planning to open a third to address the growing needs of the community, including access to clinical expertise and personalized services.

“It’s important to me that my pharmacies are viewed as trustworthy and reliable healthcare resources for the community, and that my staff listens and engages with each patient as an individual,” said Birch Health Mart owner Sheldon Birch. “Partnering with McKesson and embracing the solutions and services offered by Health Mart enables me to focus my time and efforts on customer service and clinical care for my patients. I am honored to receive this award from McKesson as it validates our commitment to the community.”

Apothecary Shops changing brand to Avella Specialty Pharmacy in August

PHOENIX — The Apothecary Shops are rebranding to become Avella Specialty Pharmacy, effective in August, the company announced Wednesday.

"We are rebranding to establish a single entity that more accurately represents the evolution of our company," stated Keith Cook, president of Avella Specialty/Apothecary Shops. "In doing so, we anticipate it will be easier for customers and partners to communicate with us."

The letters within Avella are selected from key words in the company’s mission statement: Health, Devotion and Excellence. The new infinity logo illustrates the continuous and uninterrupted commitment to patients and providers.

"Our company fundamentals have not changed. We have the same leadership, store locations and commitment to clinical excellence and patient care," Cook said.

A new brand video and updated registration is available at the company’s new website at Avella.com.

Similasan signs PR firm GroundFloor Media as agency of record

DENVER — GroundFloor Media — a Denver-based, integrated agency focusing on strategic communications, social media, reputation and crisis management, and digital strategy — on Thursday announced Similasan USA as the newest addition to its client roster.
