ADA names Walgreens National Strategic Partner

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Diabetes Association on Tuesday announced that Walgreens has been named a National Strategic Partner of the American Diabetes Association, in recognition of its commitment to support the mission and the association’s movement to Stop Diabetes.

The relationship kicks off this November during American Diabetes Month as Walgreens will be conducting a pin pad donation campaign when a debit or credit card is used for payment. In addition, Walgreens will be in seven cities across the country participating in the Association’s educational event — America Diabetes Association Expo. They also will raise critical awareness about American Diabetes Association Alert Day and encourage their customers to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for type 2 diabetes. 

Walgreens also will be promoting the importance of physical activity by participating in Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes events across the country. 

"Through its support of the American Diabetes Association, Walgreens is helping to further our movement to Stop Diabetes and plays an integral role in the advancement of our mission," stated Larry Hausner, CEO, American Diabetes Association. "Education and awareness efforts are critical for those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes, as it helps to enhance the importance of leading a healthier lifestyle."

"We are honored to be recognized as a National Strategic Partner of the American Diabetes Association and we are committed to helping people get, stay and live well by raising awareness among our customers about the prevention and detection of type 2 diabetes," commented Kermit Crawford, president of pharmacy, health and wellness, Walgreens. "We are excited about the efforts and activities we have planned for next year with the [ADA] to help raise critical funds in support of their mission, and help educate our consumers about knowing their risk for diabetes and taking steps to prevent and manage their disease."

Waters Corp. recognizes Md. pharmacy school’s mass spectrometry center as ‘center of innovation’

MILFORD, Mass. — Laboratory sciences company Waters Corp. has recognized the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences’ mass spectrometry facility as the first to receive its Waters Centers of Innovation honors, the company announced at a ceremony Tuesday.

As part of the Centers of Innovation program, the school will receive priority access to new technologies, opportunities to influence the development of next-generation research instruments, shared opportunities for collaboration with Waters and priority applications support and funding assistance. Waters honored the school for its interdisciplinary research using mass spectrometry to discover new and improved drugs to treat cancer, diabetes and infections diseases.

"Today’s ceremony is a testament to the achievements of this school," University of Maryland, Baltimore president Jay Perman said. "Our new mass spectrometry facility is the largest, most well-equipped and well-staffed facility of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region, and it will enable us to shorten the time it takes to translate research findings into new diagnostics, therapeutics and preventive procedures that will help patients."

Giant-Landover sells gift cards at 5% discount for full-price resale by non-profit organizations

LANDOVER, Md. — Supermarket chain Giant Food of Landover, Md., has started a new way for non-profit organizations to use its gift cards to raise money.

Giant-Landover announced the launch of "Ca$h for Causes," whereby non-profits can purchase at least $500 worth of Giant gift cards at a 5% discount and then sell them at face value.

"Ca$h for Causes continues our commitment as the nation’s capital grocer to give back to those who seek to improve their community," Giant-Landover manager of public and community relations Jamie Miller said. "Seventy-seven years ago, when the Cohen and Lehrman families collaborated to open the very first supermarket in our nation’s capital, the public was at the forefront of their minds. We’ve inherited a priceless legacy, which we’re privileged to build upon each and every day."
